New York Cares and Their Impact on Hurricane Sandy Victims

Hurricane Sandy was one of the worst disasters that happened in New York City. Which is why we chose to research about it. New York Cares is helping to rebuild the homes that were destroyed in the storm. Their mission is to "improve the lives of the community members long after the physical damage is repaired". They are so focused on this problem because people are dying without homes out in the cold and need homes to stay in. About 370 families had their homes destroyed, so New York Cares need many people so help fix all the damage. They have signed up 17,000 volunteers to help rebuild the homes, spend time with the elderly and children, and more.

Volunteer Help

There were 17,000 volunteers helping New York Cares with the restoration with Hurricane Sandy. They needed to rebuild 370 homes. They would do jobs like tutoring children and adults, preparing meals for the hungry, and caring for abused and neglected animals. They are located at 65 Broadway in New York, NY 10006. To become a volunteer, you can call their phone numbers during office hours. They also have an emergency contact number for weekends and late evenings.

Victor, Luke, and Navid's thoughts on Volunteering

Victor:
If I were a volunteer, my role would be to help rebuild the homes after they were destroyed. Specifically, I would paint the walls and ceilings. I plan to volunteer during my free time.
Luke:
If I were a volunteer, I will also help rebuild the homes that were destroyed, but it would be fixing the structure of the house. I plan on doing this next summer vacation.
Navid:
If I was a volunteer, I would help care for the abused and neglected animals. This will happen during the summer or any school breaks.

Things that were Done to Help

According to New York Cares, there were 1,280 projects that were completed to help repair the damage. For example, the "2012 Coat Drive", which is now over, is about people donating coats to people in specific boroughs so that they stay warm during the cold. Over 123,000 coats were donated. Also, people can join in on fixing Rockaway, specifically the farm. People clean up, and weed the farm so that it can be as good as new. Lastly, volunteers participate in telling stories and doing activities with children (Between 1st and 2nd Grade). This ends with a small celebration with the kids.

The Areas Most Effected by the Storm

Some of the most devastated cities that Hurricane Sandy Caused were New York City, NY, Breezy Point, NY , Atlantic City, NJ , and Long Beach, NJ. Even Ground Zero in Manhattan was flooded with 16 million gallons of water, and the subways also. The death toll went up to 110, New York had the highest with 48 deaths, New Jersey second with 24. $50 Billion was used to help homeowners, businesses, states and cities. In New Jersey, Governor Chris Christie "posponed" Halloween until November 5th.
